What’s covered in general liability?

In the insurance industry, we call commercial general liability a CGL - Commercial General Liability Insurance

Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL) is a type of commercial insurance that provides protection against claims of bodily injury or property damage caused by a business' operations or products. It is designed to help a business manage the risks associated with running a business, such as accidents or injuries that happen on the business' premises or as a result of using the business' products or services.

A CGL can provide coverage for:

  • Medical expenses if a customer or a third party is injured on the business' property.

  • Legal defense costs if a customer or a third party sues the business for damages or injuries.

  • Damages or settlements awarded to the customer or a third party in a lawsuit.

  • Advertising injury (libel, slander, copyright infringement)

A CGL is not legally required, but it is highly recommended for most businesses as it can provide important financial protection in the event of a claim. It's advisable to work with an insurance broker to determine what types of coverage your business needs, and to shop around and compare policies to find one that best meets your needs and budget.

It's important to note that GLI does not cover professional services, in that case, you need to have an Errors and Omissions Insurance (E&O) in place.
