OHIP and Out of Province Travelling

Are you covered traveling within Canada?

OHIP, or the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, provides coverage for some medical services for Ontario residents who are involved in accidents while they are outside of the province. However, the coverage is limited and may not cover all medical expenses.

OHIP covers emergency medical services that are medically necessary and cannot be delayed until the person returns to Ontario. This includes things like emergency surgery, hospitalization, and physician services.

If an Ontario resident is involved in an accident in another province or country, OHIP will cover the cost of emergency medical treatment for the first three days outside of Ontario. After that, the resident will be responsible for any additional costs.

OHIP also covers out-of-province ambulance services when they are medically necessary and the nearest appropriate facility is out of province.

However, OHIP does not cover the cost of transportation to and from the out-of-province facility, or the cost of accommodation for the patient or their family. It also does not cover the cost of medical treatments that are not considered emergency or medically necessary, such as elective surgery or cosmetic procedures.

It's important to note that OHIP coverage is only available to residents of Ontario who are covered by the plan. If you are travelling outside of Ontario and involved in an accident, it's recommended to purchase additional travel insurance to cover the cost of any medical services that may not be covered by OHIP.
